In a new step that moves work from the academic environment toward real-world application, the El Shorouk City Authority has formally received the design proposals prepared by third-year Architecture students at El Shorouk Academy for the development of selected city squares and entrances.

The handover represents the continuation of an earlier phase in which students presented and discussed their proposals with representatives of the City Authority as part of the Department’s community service and environmental development activities.

The submitted projects included a range of design visions aimed at improving the visual identity of the city, enhancing its urban character, upgrading public spaces, and responding to movement patterns, site conditions, and user needs.

The formal receipt of the proposals by the City Authority marks an important stage in the applied learning process, allowing students to see their work move beyond academic review and into direct engagement with an executive body responsible for the development and management of the city.

The experience also gives students practical insight into the relationship between architects and public authorities and demonstrates the importance of preparing design proposals that can be reviewed, developed, and evaluated according to real urban requirements.

Prof. Manal Yahia highlighted the importance of the initiative as part of the Department’s continuing strategy to connect architectural education with community service and real projects, while recognizing the commitment and effort demonstrated by the students throughout the design process.

Academic supervision and support were provided by faculty members including Prof. Hossam Bahgat, Dr. Eman Metwally, Dr. Ahmed Hamdy, and Dr. Yara Menshawy, who contributed to guiding the students and reviewing their proposals in relation to the urban context of El Shorouk City.

The significance of the initiative lies in shifting students from hypothetical academic exercises toward a project with a real beneficiary and executive stakeholder, strengthening their ability to respond to professional requirements, receive feedback, and develop proposals in relation to implementation and actual urban conditions.

The handover also demonstrates the potential value of collaboration between academic institutions and city authorities in community development projects, while creating opportunities to benefit from student creativity in addressing local urban challenges.

Through initiatives of this kind, the Department of Architecture at El Shorouk Academy continues to advance an educational model that combines academic knowledge, applied design, community engagement, and direct interaction with executive authorities, preparing future architects to play a more active role in shaping and improving cities.
