An Assistant faculty member (Assistant Lecturer) Haya Mohamed Mohamed obtained a PhD from Cairo University under a project funded by Zewail University of Science and Technology

The PhD thesis of Engineer Haya Mohamed Mohamed, Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering, was discussed on Thursday 4/4/2024 at Cairo University in the Department of Chemical Engineering. The title of the thesis was "Valorization of brine of reverse osmosis process by using electrodialysis cell".

The thesis focused on two aspects: an environmental aspect and an economic aspect. The environmental aspect is how to protect the environment from the brine resulting from the reverse osmosis process to be able to drain it into the waters of the Mediterranean and the Red Sea without causing any harm to the environment and fish wealth.

The economic aspect is how to obtain chemical products with economic value in the market, such as hydrochloric acid and caustic soda, from the same concentrated brine solution and the possibility of reusing these chemical compounds in the desalination plant.

This was achieved by applying the electrolysis process of the brine using the electrodialysis cell.

Laboratory experiments were conducted at Zewail University in the Environmental Engineering Program
