Part of the scientific Conference activities in the Department of Communications and Computer Engineering - Higher Institute of Engineering at Shorouk Academy

The main definition of the scientific day Dr. Hatem Zaghloul
Dr. Hatem Zaghloul is one of the most important Egyptian scientists around the world. He is the CEO of Inovatian INC. and the owner of Futira companies. Dr. Hatem Zaghloul obtained a bachelor’s degree in communications engineering from Cairo University in 1979, in addition to a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from Ain Shams University. In addition to obtaining a master’s degree in 1985, he obtained a PhD in Electromagnetic Wave Physics from the University of Calgary in 1994. He was a senior researcher at the Canadian Telus Communications Company between 1989 and 1993. His inventions, with his Egyptian partner Dr. Michel Fattoush, contributed to accelerating mobile communications, which established the fast Wi-Fi technology and the fourth and fifth generations. He currently manages a group of telecommunications, modern technology and cryptocurrency companies. His patent on which he founded "Fast Wi-Fi" has received many international awards and certificates for his achievements in the field of entrepreneurship, and Maclean's Canadian magazine considered him one of the 10 greatest Canadians.

The Seventh Conference of the Department of Communications and Computer Engineering

The scientific conference of the Department of Communications and Computer Engineering was held at the headquarters of the Higher Institute of Engineering at Shorouk Academy on Monday, November 11, under the patronage of Major General Dr. Ahmed Abdel Rahim, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Shorouk Academy, Professor Dr. Gouda Ghanem, Facilitator of the Institute and Vice President of the Academy, and Professor Dr. Salah Al-Ajouz, Head of the Department of Communications and Computer Engineering. This is the seventh conference of its kind held at the institute, based on the department’s efforts to raise the level of education and scientific research and provide opportunities for students to learn about the latest global developments in the field of electronics, communications, computers and control engineering and the requirements of the labor market, and also to embody the bonds of cooperation between the department and its programs and the labor market, in addition to informing state institutions and relevant companies of the results of the outputs of both the Electronics and Communications Engineering Program and the Computer and Control Engineering Program. Based on these goals, the 7th Scientific Conference of the Department of Communications and Computer Engineering was organized. We were honored to invite Prof. Dr. Hatem Zaghloul one of the most important distinguished scientists in the field of
communications engineering, to provide an opportunity for students to benefit from the distinguished Egyptian scientists in the field of communications and computers, to keep pace with the tremendous progress in the field. Dr. Hatem Zaghloul gave an important lecture on the invention and development of fast Wi-Fi and its impact on the future of networks. During the conference, Dr. Hatem stressed the importance of keeping pace with the rapid progress in the fields of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and cybersecurity to protect systems, networks, and programs against digital attacks, whether to access sensitive information to benefit from it, change it, or destroy it.
He clarified that after relocating to Canada, he started researching electromagnetic waves and how they are used in wireless communications. "I connected my engineering studies in Egypt with electromagnetic waves when I started working in Canada, and from there I began to see enormous potential for improving wireless communications," he told us. This concept sparked a profound change in the technology industry. He claimed that his achievements didn’t stop with Wi-Fi. He was assigned to research the third generation of mobile networks in Canada. The actual problem was to develop a new generation of communications that was more effective and secure, as the previous generation was simple to intercept, and the second generation was a digital progression. Today's fourth and fifth-generation networks are constructed on top of this. "We put a lot of effort into solving many issues, and we had no idea that we were going to create a technology that would serve as the cornerstone of high-speed communications across the globe," he continued. Following several tests, we were able to develop a wireless data transfer technique that is now known as "Wi-Fi." Only three of the 60 large firms offered the technology to show interest. "We were very disappointed at the time and wished we had sold the idea for even $10,000," Dr. Zaghloul remarked about this.
"A Canadian businessman at the time advised us to provide a working model of the idea instead of just a theoretical concept," Dr. Zaghloul stated, outlining the biggest obstacles they had to overcome. He made them an offer to purchase the project for $5 million if they could demonstrate that they could carry out the plan. They managed to create a finished model in just nine months. An important turning point in their journey was reached in October 1993 when they unveiled the first successful Wi-Fi model. "We were able to transfer 20 million pieces of information per second when we created the first model, which was a huge achievement at the time," he explained. Major corporations like Intel expressed interest in shrinking the gadget to fit into a computer after the first model was shown. In 1997, we succeeded in turning it into a
card that could be inserted inside a computer, despite considerable difficulties in lowering its size. In the framework of the department and the academy’s keenness on transparency between it and its students, some of the important achievements made by the department in many aspects were presented:
In the field of quality education:

-       Obtaining the program accreditation certificate for both the Electronics and Communications Engineering program and the Computer and Control Engineering program from the National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education.

-       Visiting the Engineering Sector Committee for the thirteenth stage of 2024 AD and appearing honorably within the institute's departments, which was reflected in the institute maintaining its distinction in continuing to obtain first place in the ranking among all private engineering institutes in Egypt.

-       Applying for international accreditation (ABET) for the Computer and Control Engineering program. The Redness review report for the program was submitted in its final form and the procedures are being completed.

-       The program accreditation standards for the July 2022 edition issued by the National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education were adopted, as these standards will be implemented starting from the beginning of the current academic year 2024/2025.

-       Completing the preparation of the list of credit hours for both the Electronics and Communications Engineering program and the Computer and Control Engineering program within the programs of the Higher Institute of Engineering, as they were submitted to the Engineering Sector at the Ministry of Higher Education for accreditation.

In the field of postgraduate studies and promotion of faculty members:

-       Dr. Fatima Al-Foly was promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor, Assistant Lecturer Iman Samir was promoted to the rank of Lecturer, and Engineer Menatallah Nabil was promoted to the rank of Assistant Lecturer.
